Sr Advanced Hardware Engineer - Communication, Navigation and Surveillance

The Senior Advanced Hardware Engineer will play a critical role in designing, developing, validating, and sustaining Communication, Navigation, and Surveillance (CNS) electronics for Honeywell Aerospace’s Electronic Solutions organization. This role contributes directly to the advancement of aircraft safety, connectivity, and avionics capability by delivering robust hardware for next-generation aerospace products.
The engineer will lead complex design activities, mentor junior engineers, collaborate across multi-disciplinary teams, and ensure hardware meets safety, reliability, certification, and performance requirements expected of CNS systems deployed globally.
You will work out of our Olathe, KS location on an ONSITE work schedule.
Key Responsibilities:
Hardware Design & Development
- Lead the architecture, design, and analysis of digital, analog, mixed-signal, RF, and power-electronics circuits used in CNS avionics.
- Develop hardware specifications, schematics, bills of materials, simulation models, and interface definitions.
- Guide PCB layout, component selection, EMI/EMC compliance considerations, manufacturability, environmental robustness, and certification readiness.
- Perform detailed design reviews and drive issue resolution across teams.
System Integration & Validation
- Integrate hardware with embedded software, FPGA logic, RF front-ends, and system-level avionics architectures.
- Plan and execute verification and validation strategies, including functional testing, environmental stress, HALT/HASS, qualification (DO-160), and certification support.
- Debug complex system interactions and guide root-cause analysis on field returns, production issues, and test anomalies.
Product Lifecycle Ownership
- Collaborate with Systems Engineering, Project Engineering, and Program Management throughout requirements definition, design, integration, verification, production, and sustainment.
- Support configuration management, engineering changes, obsolescence management, and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Ensure compliance with aerospace regulatory requirements, safety standards, and applicable processes.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Work closely with Electrical Engineering, RF Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Test Engineering, and Manufacturing to deliver high-quality CNS hardware.
- Contribute to cross-site design reviews, knowledge-sharing forums, and technical talks.
- Interface with customers, suppliers, and certification authorities as needed.
Leadership & Mentorship
- Act as a technical leader and mentor for early-career engineers.
- Drive innovation, design quality, and engineering excellence across the Olathe site.
YOU MUST HAVE
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in a technical discipline such as science, technology, engineering, or mathematics.
- Minimum 6 years of professional experience in hardware design, preferably in aerospace or other safety-critical applications.
- Demonstrated expertise in analog/digital circuit design, schematic capture, simulation, and board-level debugging.
- Experience with design tools (Mentor/Siemens, Altium, OrCAD, SPICE, MATLAB, etc.).
- Strong knowledge of EMI/EMC principles, DO-160 environmental qualification, and DO-254 considerations.
WE VALUE
- Master’s degree in engineering or equivalent advanced training.
- Experience with avionics CNS technologies (COM radios, NAV receivers, transponders, ADS-B, DME, radar systems, etc.).
- Familiarity with RF test equipment, automation scripting, or FPGA-based hardware.
- Prior experience in technical leadership, mentoring, or project-engineering collaboration.
- Strong communication skills and ability to present technical content to diverse audiences.
